Every year, more Americans are introduced to the option of obtaining medical cannabis products in a dispensary setting. As patients share their experiences with family and friends, interest in the benefits of cannabis continues to grow, even among those who aren’t necessarily interested in its sometimes-intoxicating effects. To meet this need, cannabis topicals are quickly becoming a popular option.
When applied directly to the skin, cannabis topicals produce a localized effect that can provide beneficial symptom relief without any psychoactive response. To explain this effect, it’s important to understand that the human body contains two types of receptors that react to cannabis exposure. CB1 receptors function primarily within the brain, producing psychoactive effects such as relaxation, mood elevation, and appetite stimulation. You’ll recognize these as the effects most commonly associated with inhaled cannabis.
Products applied to the skin, however, only activate CB2 receptors, which are located throughout the body. These receptors are known for producing an anti-inflammatory response when exposed to cannabinoids. The resulting effect can release tension, loosen sore muscles, and relieve pain. Additionally, many patients are finding that cannabis topicals can provide dermatological benefits, giving rise to the use of cannabis-infused products for cosmetic purposes as well.
Capital City Care is excited to introduce two new topical cannabis products: Liberty Cream and Liberty Relief Spray, available now at the dispensary. We’re happy to add these options to our menu and you can look forward to additional topical selections coming soon.
