Who Can Make Purchases?
Reciprocity in D.C. includes certified patients from most state medical marijuana programs. At this time, the D.C. Dept. of Health has authorized certified patients from the following states to make purchases at D.C. dispensaries:
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- California
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Florida
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Mississippi
- Montana
- Nevada

- New York
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Puerto Rico
- Rhode Island
- South Dakota
- Utah
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington
- West Virginia
Other states will be declared eligible once their medical marijuana program is fully operational. Please understand that this is D.C. law, not our store policy. We’re working with the D.C. Council and Dept. of Health to create access for certified patients from every state. We’ll continue to update our resources as new states are added to the program.
What Do I Need to Bring?
The following two items are required to make purchases at D.C. dispensaries:
- State-issued photo ID
- Current state-issued medical marijuana card OR state-issued document proving current certification in the medical marijuana program. If your state doesn’t require a physical medical marijuana card, please bring any mail you’ve received from the program or print a copy of your online certification record in the state registry.
- If you are visiting Capital City Care for the first time please be sure to bring with you your recommending physician’s information (name and license number).
Our security staff will need to see both documents before welcoming you into the facility. Our reception staff will verify your documentation and then you’ll be able to make purchases at the dispensary counter. Please note that we cannot make exceptions for patients who do not have the required documents. In the event of expired or missing documents, we are prohibited from granting access to the dispensary. First-time patients are welcome to visit anytime during store hours, but we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before close on your first visit to the dispensary.
How much can I purchase?
Under D.C. law, patients may purchase up to 8 ounces within a 30-day window. You may visit as often as you’d like, as long as your total dispensary purchases in D.C. do not exceed 8 ounces within a 30-day period. If you reach your limit, you’ll be able to purchase again as soon as one of your previous purchases becomes more than 30 days old.
Can I make a purchase for recreational use?
Recreational sales are not permitted in the District. Under D.C. law, residents may grow a small number of plants in their home for personal use, but the District’s legalization policy does not allow sales. Dispensaries in D.C. are medical only and require a medical marijuana card from an eligible state program in order to make purchases.
