S.O.M.E. sends a big thanks to dispensary patients
By Maishah Asante-English
Thank you to everyone who donated to our food drive during our second anniversary celebration. Because of your generosity, our charity partner organization So Others Might Eat (SOME) was able to add to its stock of food items during what is normally considered a “dry period.”
Stephanie Shallah, non-monetary donation program manager, said the snacks, cereal and other non-perishable food items that patients collected will be especially helpful in meeting the needs of residential programs, homeless and low-income individuals.
“It is an understatement to say how grateful we are,” Shallah said. “Food donations are a big issue this time of year. People tend to hold onto food items, so we use what we have in the cold season.”
SOME, which began a soup kitchen in 1970 encompasses a number of services and programs including housing, job training, addiction recovery, mental health care, elderly care and an afternoon school program.
“There is certainly a great need for the many people who come to us for help and your items will certainly be put to good use right away,” she said.
Food donations are always welcome, but there is an immediate need for men’s clothing. Travel kits and small hygiene items are also high on the list of needed supplies.
Dispensary patients who wish to continue donating beyond the drive may continue to do so. Please visit the organization’s site at www.some.org for more information.
