Strain: AK-47
Category: Sativa-leaning Hybrid
Genetics: Columbian, Thai, Mexican. Afghani
Patients interested in the history of cannabis genetics sometimes ask us what became of the storied sativa strains of the 60’s and 70’s. Famous equatorial varieties such as Colombian and Thai were once considered the finest cannabis on the planet. These names are seldom seen on modern menus, but their legacy lives on. Look no further than AK-47, a true classic that combines decades-old genetics that offer a window into the cannabis plant’s fascinating past.
Colombian, Mexican, Thai, and Afghani strains once grew freely in the hills of their respective regions. Known as “landraces,” these pure varieties were untouched by modern breeding techniques, adapting instead to their environments over many centuries. In 1992, the breeders at Serious Seeds created AK-47 to preserve these famous strains in a new hybrid designed to combine the World’s best into one perfect package. Several years and numerous Cannabis Cup awards later, AK-47 remains popular with patients and growers alike, making it one of the most enduring strains found on menus today.
Its colorful appearance includes rich green hues, bright red hairs, and surprisingly thick and full buds considering its sativa-dominant heritage. The aroma is sour and skunky with fruity undertones that translate into a slightly sweeter flavor when smoked or vaporized. The effect, unlike its name, is famously pleasant and relaxing as it strikes a balance between its primarily sativa parentage and the Afghani side’s indica influences.
Though new to our menu for 2016, AK-47 is among the most historic strains we’re worked with at Capital City Cultivation. We’re proud to make this important example of classic cannabis available to our patients and demonstrate what is possible when age-old strains are grown to modern medical standards.
