Three years after performing the first sale of medical marijuana in the District, Capital City Care celebrated D.C.’s medical marijuana program with a food drive, special discounts, and a generous prize drawing. A registered medical marijuana patient who won the grand prize will be awarded a free ounce of medical marijuana each month for one year, valued at up to $4,200.
David Guard, General Manager at Capital City Care, issued the following statement:
“We’d like D.C. residents to know that we’re here and we really care about our patients. After three years, we still hear from people who are hurting and don’t realize they qualify for medical marijuana. Patients struggling with conditions like chronic headaches, anxiety and insomnia are eligible and we’re happy to help. The dispensary is a place where people can expect generosity and compassion.”
Registered patient Gary, who won the prize drawing, had this to say:
“I just couldn’t believe it when I got the call that I’d won. This is really going to be a big help for me and I’m so grateful. Medical marijuana has done a lot for me and we’re lucky to have places like this in D.C.”
Capital City Care first opened its doors on July 29, 2013 and performed the District’s first sale of medical marijuana. In July 2014, the D.C. Council expanded the law to allow patients with any health condition to participate if approved by a doctor. There are currently 3,915 registered medical marijuana patients enrolled in the program and 308 registered physicians. D.C. residents who wish to participate must obtain a doctor recommendation and submit an application to the Department of Health. Once approved, the patient will receive their medical marijuana card in the mail and can begin making visits to the dispensary.
The availability of medical marijuana in D.C.’s program has greatly improved in 2016, following Council legislation that increased the number of plants cultivation centers can produce. Dispensaries now carry a wide range of products and patients may purchase up to two ounces in a 30-day period.
Capital City Care was the first licensed medical marijuana dispensary in Washington, D.C. It is the only service provider in the District licensed to both cultivate and dispense medical marijuana.
