We are so excited to celebrate our third year as the premiere dispensary in the District! A big part of this celebration includes recognizing our community partner, SOME (So Others Might Eat).
With the support of volunteers and Provide-A-Meal groups, SOME serves a hot breakfast and lunch to hungry men, women and children in their dining room on O Street every day of the year. Last year more than 400,00 meals were served in SOME’s dining rooms and residential programs. What began as a small soup kitchen in 1970 to help feed the city’s poor, has grown to a number of support services including emergency shelter, affordable housing, job training, mental health counseling and addiction recovery services, elderly care and an afterschool program. SOME was also named the best workplace this year by the Washington Post.
Last year, Capital City Care partnered with SOME and held two canned food drives for donation. This year, however, the drive has a new focus as SOME is moving toward a healthier direction, and suggesting donations lean more toward low-sugar, low-sodium items, and items to avoid such as candy, chips and soda. So please, remember the next time you plan a visit to the dispensary, please check your cupboards or head to the grocery store for non-perishable donations and receive a punch for each item (up to five).
